Shanna Baker
Shanna Baker, DVM
Clinic Owner / Medical Director

Dr. Shanna Baker is originally from Eastern North Carolina and has been a dedicated part of the Western North Carolina veterinary community for several years. With more than 30 years of experience in both large and small animal medicine, she brings a depth of knowledge, steadiness, and perspective that shapes the care provided at Andrews Veterinary Hospital. Veterinary medicine is not just her profession — it is a lifelong calling.

Dr. Baker’s professional interests center on internal medicine and diagnostics, where she excels at problem-solving and managing complex cases. She has a strong passion for preventive care, geriatric medicine, and hospice support, and is deeply committed to helping pets live comfortable, meaningful lives at every stage. Known for her compassionate yet straightforward communication style, Dr. Baker is a trusted advocate for both patients and their families.

Outside the clinic, animals remain at the center of Dr. Baker’s life. She lives on a small farm and shares her home with three French Bulldogs, two mixed-breed dogs, five cats, a horse, two miniature horses, two goats, and a variety of reptiles — a reflection of her lifelong dedication to animals of all kinds.

In her free time, Dr. Baker enjoys kayaking, gardening, spending time outdoors, and exploring the mountains in her Jeep. She embraces the mountain lifestyle and the natural beauty of Western North Carolina and is proud to serve the Andrews community while leading Andrews Veterinary Hospital with experience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her patients and the people who love them.

Leah Abrams
Leah Abrams, RVT

Hospital Administrator / Clinic Owner / Registered Veterinary Technician

Leah grew up just over the mountains in a small town in East Tennessee. She attended Hiwassee College on a full basketball scholarship, graduating in 1997, and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science from Tennessee Wesleyan University in 2000. Pursuing her passion for veterinary medicine, she later completed her degree in Veterinary Technology at St. Petersburg College and became a Registered Veterinary Technician.

With over 25 years of experience in veterinary medicine, Leah is highly skilled in patient care, with special interests in behavior, dentistry, and hands-on nursing. She is a Fear Free Certified Professional and is committed to making every veterinary visit as low-stress as possible for both pets and their owners.

In 2014, Leah moved to Andrews, NC, after purchasing Andrews Veterinary Hospital. She now serves as co-owner and Hospital Administrator, working closely with her wife, Christine, to manage both the medical and operational sides of the hospital. Her mission is to ensure AVH remains the most compassionate and trusted veterinary clinic in the region.

Outside of the hospital, Leah feels most at home in the mountains. She lives in Murphy, NC with Christine and their 7 dogs, 7 cats, and array of tropical fish tanks and spends as much time as possible outdoors. Trail running through the mountain terrain is her favorite way to recharge, and she rarely passes up an opportunity to get out on the trails. Whether pushing long miles or simply enjoying the quiet of the mountains, being outside is an essential part of her life.

Whether she is managing a clinic day or out on the trails with her dogs, Leah brings focus, energy, and compassion to everything she does. She is proud to serve the Andrews community and to help lead AVH with integrity, dedication, and heart.

Christine (Chris) Abrams
Christine (Chris) Abrams
Hospital Administrator / Co-Owner / Veterinary Assistant
Andrews Veterinary Hospital

Christine serves in multiple roles at Andrews Veterinary Hospital, including Hospital Administrator, co-owner, Veterinary Assistant, Customer Service Representative, IT lead, and all-around problem solver. She works closely with her wife, Leah, to oversee daily operations, support staff, and ensure the hospital runs efficiently and smoothly for both patients and clients.

At AVH, Christine is deeply involved in both patient care and behind-the-scenes operations. She manages clinic technology and systems, troubleshoots operational challenges, and takes on whatever needs to be fixed, built, organized, or improved. She values efficiency, adaptability, and continuous improvement, and is known for stepping in wherever the team needs support.

Christine holds a Master of Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Bachelor of Science with dual majors in Biology and Chemistry, along with a minor in Animal Science. She is currently pursuing her Veterinary Technology degree through Penn Foster, continuing to expand her clinical knowledge and hands-on skills.

Outside of the clinic, Christine is an animal lover with a particular appreciation for cats, along with a soft spot for border collies. She lives in Murphy, NC with Leah and their household of 7 dogs, 7 cats, and several tanks full of tropical fish. She enjoys trail running, hiking, camping, backpacking, kayaking, and mountain biking with their dogs, and occasionally with their more adventurous cats.

Christine is a proud mother of two daughters, Kylie (Forever 21) and Hannah (21), who attends the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. With a strong work ethic, steady leadership style, and genuine love for animals, Christine brings reliability, versatility, and heart to the Andrews Veterinary Hospital team.

Taylor Martin, DVM

Veterinary Surgeon

Dr. Taylor Martin is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a Certified Cat Friendly Professional and a Fear Free Certified Practitioner, with a strong commitment to providing calm, low-stress care for every patient.

At Andrews Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Martin sees appointments and performs the majority of scheduled surgeries. She is a highly skilled veterinary surgeon with a special interest in orthopedic surgery, along with feline medicine and ophthalmology. Dr. Martin is especially excited to bring advanced orthopedic surgical care to a small mountain community, expanding the level of specialty services available locally and reducing the need for referrals whenever possible.

Known around the clinic for her approachable style and love of cats, Dr. Martin combines technical precision with thoughtful, compassionate care. Her attention to detail and surgical expertise make her a valued resource for both patients and the AVH medical team.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Martin leads a very active lifestyle. She enjoys triathlons, running, biking, skiing, camping, and exploring national parks. She has completed an Ironman competition and continues to train and challenge herself physically.

Dr. Martin lives with her husband, Eric, who is also a veterinarian, and her twin stepdaughters. Their household includes a dog, a lizard, and an ever-growing number of cats. She is proud to be part of the Andrews Veterinary Hospital team and is dedicated to providing exceptional surgical and medical care to the pets of our community.

Amber

Meet Amber Harrell, one of the friendly faces you’ll see at Andrews Veterinary Hospital! Born and raised in Hayesville, NC, Amber has been working in the veterinary field since 2017, and she’s passionate about helping both pets and their people feel welcome and cared for.

Amber is the person behind the phones and the front desk, always ready to help you schedule appointments and make your visit as smooth as possible. Her friendly demeanor and love for animals make her a great fit for our team.

When she’s not at the clinic, Amber loves spending her time outdoors. Whether she’s kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or hunting, she’s always up for an adventure. She’s also a lifelong Jeep enthusiast and loves hitting the road with her family. Amber lives at home with her husband and is a proud dog mom to two pups: Sequoia, her seizure-alert service dog, and Luna, a spunky rat terrier. For Amber, life is all about family, her dogs, and enjoying the simple joys of the outdoors.

Beth Shirley- Veterinary Assistant

Beth has over 18 years of experience in the veterinary industry and has been a valued member of the AVH team for more than 15 years. Originally from Florida, she moved to the mountains in 2008 and now lives in Murphy, NC.

Beth is cross-trained in small animal, large animal, and exotic pet care, bringing versatility and depth to our practice. Her calm presence, clinical knowledge, and love for animals make her a trusted and appreciated part of our daily operations.

At home, Beth shares her life with one cat, Merlin, and three dogs- Sally, Nemaria, and Barf. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, biking, gardening, and curling up with a good book.

Dillon
Dillon Hogaboom- Veterinary Assistant

Dillon began his career in veterinary medicine in 2010 at age 15, bringing over a decade of experience and passion to the field. While he’s often recognized as “the guy with the super cool car” (thanks to his head-turning Ford Bronco), there’s much more to Dillon than his love of vehicles. Originally from Florida, he has lived in several Southeastern states before settling in Western North Carolina, where he’s embraced the mountain lifestyle.

Dillon earned a degree from Haywood College in Natural Resource Management with a specialization in Forest Management Technologies, reflecting his deep love for the outdoors and nature. When he’s not working, Dillon enjoys spending quality time with his family, reading, hunting, and fishing. His appreciation for the natural world extends to his home life, where he cares for a unique and diverse group of pets: Fletcher, an African Grey Parrot; Freyja, his beloved Rottweiler; and Loki, his mischievous cat. Dillon’s dedication to animals, combined with his expertise and care, makes him a valued member of the AVH team. Whether he’s at work or enjoying the great outdoors, Dillon brings enthusiasm and knowledge to everything he does.

Mincey
Mincey Wiley- Veterinary Assistant

Mincey grew up in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, where her love for animals started early and never stopped growing. While she cares for animals of all shapes and sizes, she has a special affection for big dogs.

Mincey is a flexible and dedicated member of the AVH team. She primarily serves as a Veterinary Assistant but also steps in at the front desk when needed, always willing to support wherever she is most needed.

She lives in Murphy, NC, with her husband, Gage, and their lively crew of animals. Their dogs, Belair, Monte Carlo, and Tons, are all named after classic cars, reflecting Mincey and Gage’s shared love for all things motorized. Belair is a heeler and hound mix with endless energy and a love for toy tires. Monte Carlo is a Catahoula, Australian Shepherd, and hound mix who is always up for an adventure. Tons is an 80-pound gentle giant who completes their pack. They also keep several chickens and roosters that add even more character to their home.

When she is not at the clinic, Mincey enjoys spending time outdoors, working on motor projects, and soaking in the mountain scenery with her family and dogs by her side.

Abby
Abby Childs

Abby is a Reidsville, NC native who grew up on a small farm surrounded by dogs, cats, goats, and horses, which sparked her lifelong passion for animal care. She has been working in the veterinary field since 2015 and brings a strong foundation of experience and dedication to the AVH team.

She studied agricultural and animal sciences at North Carolina State University, where she also met her husband, Nick. They now live in the Topton area and share their home with a full and lively group of animals. Their crew includes two cats, Pancake and Dexter, an Alaskan Malamute and Husky mix named Chinook, an Australian Shepherd and Poodle mix named Dahlia, a growing flock of chickens, and several goats.

Abby has a special love for Arctic dog breeds and is a passionate advocate for adopting rescue animals. She also has a deep love for horses and enjoys any chance to be around them. When she’s not at work, Abby spends her time horseback riding, painting, reading, and being outdoors. Whether she’s hiking with her dogs, tending to her goats and chickens, or enjoying the mountain scenery, she finds joy in staying active and connected to nature.

Abby worked closely with Dr. Baker for more than four years in Eastern North Carolina and was excited to continue that partnership here at AVH. She is proud to be part of the team and is committed to providing thoughtful, compassionate care to every patient.

Ashley Wilson
Ashley Wilson- Veterinary Assistant

Ashley is a dedicated Veterinary Assistant and occasional Customer Service Representative at Andrews Veterinary Hospital. A lifelong resident of Murphy, NC, she grew up surrounded by animals, which sparked her early passion for veterinary care.

She is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology at Appalachian State University, building on her long-standing love of animals. Ashley shares her home with three dogs named Cookie, Willow, and Amy, along with a green tree frog. Cookie is a playful Australian Shepherd mix who loves the water, Willow is a spirited feist, and Amy is a gentle collie mix.

Ashley is known for being a quick learner and a hard worker. She enjoys all aspects of her role at AVH and takes pride in helping patients and their owners. When she is not at the clinic, she can often be found hiking with her dogs, working on her Jeep, or cooking and baking at home.

Her friendly nature, strong work ethic, and love for animals make her a valuable part of the AVH team.
